RCNY § 5-56

(a)If a window gate, grille, bar or similar device has not been approved by the Board of Standards and Appeals of the City of New York for use on fire escape windows the seller must place a tag or label on it, stating that: (1) it is illegal to use the device on a fire escape window; (2) use of the device on a fire escape window is a serious safety hazard; (3) use of the device on a fire escape window may subject the user to a fine by the Department of Buildings.

(b)The tag or label required by this section must bear the word "WARNING" in boldface upper-case type at least one-quarter inch tall. The following warning complies with this regulation: WARNING It is illegal to use this gate on a fire escape window. Use of this gate on a fire escape window is a serious safety hazard and may also subject the user to a fine by the Department of Buildings.
