1607.9.1 Columns in parking areas.

BC § 1607.9.1

Unless specially protected, columns in parking areas subject to impact of moving vehicles shall be designed to resist the lateral load due to impact. For passenger vehicles, this lateral load shall be taken as a minimum service live load of 6,000 pounds (26.70 kN) applied at least 1 foot 6 inches (457.2 mm) above the roadway, and acting simultaneously with other design loads. In addition, columns in parking areas shall meet the requirements of Section 1616 for structural integrity. Vehicle barrier systems in garages accommodating trucks and buses shall be designed in accordance with NYSDOT Bridge Manual and the NYSDOT LRFD Bridge Design Specifications.
